When you are living with a chronic illness, you get all kinds of advice thrown your way from doctors, other healthcare providers, and even friends & family. It is hard to know what pieces of information to implement and which to throw out.
To improve your health and quality of life, you will choose to try a lot of these strategies, medications, exercises, foods, & books. But what I want to share with you today is the most powerful tool you can bring into your life to increase your overall health.
This tool is occupation. I know, you’re thinking… “uh, I have a job, and it doesn’t do much toward helping me be healthy!” or you’re saying “I’m in so much pain, I can’t even work!” Well, I want you to scrap everything you think you know about occupations because I’m about to drop a knowledge bomb.
To occupational therapists (that’s what I am!), occupations are considered anything that you need or want to do in your life. This could be as simple as brushing your teeth or as complex as playing the violin with a professional orchestra. Occupations make up our day-to-day life and are the subject of our hopes and dreams.
Research & experience has shown that when people engage in meaningful activities on a regular basis, their health SOARS! Finding out what you love and doing it with purpose improves your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, & soulful health.
When you have a chronic illness, it can be challenging to figure out how to do what you love when your symptoms get in the way. This, among a lot of other things, is what we focus on in the EMPOWER Over Illness program. Find out more about the EMPOWER program here.
