It is impossible to get away from pain. It follows us everywhere we go. It’s waiting around every corner. And we’ve all experienced it at one point or another in some form.
Physical pain – the aching and burning in our bones, joints, and muscles; the piercing stabs that keep us up at night
Emotional pain – unrealized grief; hauntings of our past failures; unexpressed love, anger, and fear
Spiritual pain – the gnawing feeling that there is something more to life; feeling unfulfilled in life and in purpose
Each one of these experiences of pain is unique in its manifestation in our lives, but every single one of them leaves us feeling worse than before. I talk a lot about physical pain as an occupational therapist and someone living with chronic illnesses, but I also dig deeply into other forms of pain as a life coach and as a human. Our society as a whole tends to favor discussions of physical pain over things less tangible and less solvable (although, on a wide scale, we don’t seem to have the physical pain aspect solved either, but I digress…), but we really can’t talk about one without talking about the others. It’s all connected.
Regardless of what happens first, it is almost always true that when someone suffers from one kind of pain, they suffer from all kinds of pain. After all, we do not live life in a bubble, and the fine art of piecing the story of our lives together day by day is influenced by thousands of events, thoughts, people, emotions, and experiences. Pain feeds off of all of those tiny pieces and weaves its way into the very fiber of our being. It makes sense, then, that to overcome pain, we must become intimately familiar with the intricately woven threads of our life’s stories.
This seems like a big, daunting task! And in some ways, it is. I won’t sugar coat it: overcoming pain and suffering is a long, hard journey, one that continues throughout our entire lives. But then again, the pain and suffering itself is an even longer, even harder journey to walk. Ultimately, the choice is yours, and it really is a choice. No, I’m not going to try and convince you that you can heal your physical pain just by making a choice, but you can certainly mark the beginning of the end of your suffering. Pain happens to us; suffering is a choice.
Once you’ve made the decision to end your suffering, you need a powerful tool to help you on your journey. This tool is one that anyone has access to. It is available to each and every one of us at any time. It doesn’t cost any money, only your time and devotion. This tool is: desire.
Desires are our dreams, our goals, the things that light us up, the activities that make us laugh, the things that make us feel full of love and joy, the moments that wake us up and challenge us, and the actions that make us feel whole. Desires are sacred. Desires are not always easy. Desires require love, action, devotion, and attention. But desires have the power to end our suffering if we let them.
When we are in pain – physical, emotional, or spiritual – we shirk away from desires. We stop painting. We lose sight of the joy of spending time with friends. We put our dreams on hold. We neglect to eat the foods that make us feel good and whole. We put desire on the back burner to focus on the pain. And then we wonder why we get more and more pain.
What if we focused our time and energy on desire?
What if we lived our lives in devotion to our desires?
What if we did something every day that made us feel joy?
What if we did something every week that challenged us?
What if we set (and met!) our goals?
I named my coaching program Desirous Story because of the healing power that comes from infusing desire into our life’s story. Mountains are moved. Incredible shifts happen. Dreams are realized. Suffering is ended.
If you’re ready to take action toward your desires and end your suffering today, I can help. There are so many ways you can walk this journey, and I’m not about to assert that my way is the only way. But being on this path myself, and being a life coach and occupational therapist, I know I can help you design a life you love to live (without suffering!). If this feels right for you, let’s chat. Email me at Alyson@DesirousStory.com with the subject line “I’m ready to live my desires!” and I will set you up with a free 2-hour coaching call.
